Understanding the Sustainable Development Fee

What the SDF is, what it pays for, and how it affects the cost of your journey to Bhutan.

Bhutan’s tourism policy has always been guided by a simple idea: high value, low volume. The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is the way that idea is put into practice.

What is the SDF?

The SDF is a daily fee paid by visitors to the Royal Government of Bhutan. It currently stands at USD 100 per adult per night, with children aged 6–12 paying half and children under 6 exempt.

Where does the money go?

The fee funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, conservation of forests and wildlife, sustainable infrastructure and programmes that keep Bhutan carbon-negative.

Is the visa included?

No — the SDF is separate from the one-time USD 40 visa fee. We handle both for you and show them transparently in your quote.
